I was wondering if you could please find out what the sediment
and redness in our water is? We’ve had sediment and redness in our
water during the recent cold weather. The water company simply says
to ‘Let the water run a while before using it.’ Can you find out
what is causing this and how safe our water is?
Rusty Water
“I was wondering if you could please find out what the sediment and redness in our water is? We’ve had sediment and redness in our water during the recent cold weather. The water company simply says to ‘Let the water run a while before using it.’ Can you find out what is causing this and how safe our water is?
If my children do not let the water run long enough and drink the sediment will it hurt them? Should we switch to bottled water even to brush our teeth? I’m very worried about this situation and appreciate anything you can find out.”
Red Phone:
Caller the sediment in your water is most likely from old, galvanized water lines underneath your house. Red Phone contacted operations supervisor for the water department down at city operations, Dan Aldridge, who said typically red water has to do with old lines at the house.
“With the freezing weather, pipes will expand and contract and release some of that sediment. It (the sediment) usually should go away within a couple of minutes of flushing,” Aldridge said. “If this doesn’t take care of it, call us back and we will come out to look further into it and assess the situation.”
So caller, cold weather or possible increased flow in the area like a fire hydrant for example is likely the cause of the discolored water. Operations says run the water for a few minutes and if it does go away or is recurrent, call them at 846-0444.
draft dodging
“I just read a letter by (Alan) Viarengo and I’d like to make a comment about it. Urging people to not go if they are drafted that it’s against the law and they will go to jail. He is urging people to do something illegal. I have a problem with him calling all Democrats fascist. And I don’t know Daniel Garcia, but to label someone a local fetid hypocrite like Hugo Chavez seems to be excessive.
I know you have cleaned up his language before, but can you do something when he suggests illegal actions, thank you.”
Red Phone:
Thanks for the comments, good caller. We understand. Draft protesting/dodging has been around far longer than Mr. Viarengo’s latest proposal. It’s not a novel idea. We do like to keep the pointless name calling in check, so thanks for the reminder. But the opinion page is for the expression of thoughts and it’s important to allow a variety, whether the paper or community agrees or disagrees.
wrong number?
“I’m just curious to know what happened to the time and temperature number that we used to call 842-1711, and we can’t get any answer now and I don’t what’s happened?”
Red Phone:
Well caller, Red Phone wondered if there might be a message at this number explaining why, so it dialed up 842-1711 and got a message from Verizon that gave the time, but no temperature. So if you don’t have a watch close by, but you do have a phone, dial this number and you won’t be late for your next appointment.
