The Mustangs were up to the challenge Saturday, edging Central Coast Section 10th ranked Los Gatos 1-0 at the Wildcats’ home field.
Jose Armando Hernandez scored Gilroy’s goal with 10 seconds left until halftime. The junior outside middle’s first goal of the season was set up by a Bruce Ocana corner kick. It hit off the chest of Kevin Grove, whose shot went off a defender. Hernandez got the carom and scored from in close.
“It was a real good victory for us,” Hernandez said. “We had two full halves where everybody played to their full potential. We showed what we could do against a good team.”
Gilroy (5-2-3) had a 9-3 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Los Gatos is 6-2-2.
“They were starting their attacks deep in their end zone with throw-ins,” GHS co-coach Armando Padilla said. “Much of the game we had control.”
“It’s the first game all-around that we played solid offense and defense,” co-coach Brian Hall said. “The kids put it all together. We had our best week of practice up the game and that translated into a positive result and positive effort. Hopefully, this will be a turning point for us getting us to play what the Dutch call ‘total’ soccer.”
The Mustangs, who are 0-0-2 in TCAL, resume league action Friday at Palma.
