Gilroy – Gavilan College closed early Thursday when a watermain broke near the Child Development Center on campus. Students and staff were told to leave as soon as they finished their business.
The campus will re-open today and updates will be posted on the Gavilan College Web site www.gavilan.edu, said Jan Chargin, public information officer.
GAL accepting grant requests
Gilroy – Last year Gilroy Assistance League gave out more than $10,000 to various local youth causes, such as St. Joseph’s Family Center, Rebekah Children’s Home, South Valley Suzuki Music Foundation, Sportsman Chef’s Fishability Day, Bonfante Gardens Education Foundation, and others.
Grant requests should be a written letter asking for a specific amount and how the funds will be used. Funds are to be used for children and youth needs and programs.

A frank discussion about sex
Gilroy – South Valley Community Church will host a sex-talk seminar for parents. A panel of marriage and family therapists will explain how to answer the “Where do babies come from?” question and explain how to support older children who have committed to abstinence until marriage.
Seminar takes place from 6:30 to 9pm tonight, in the church auditorium. Seminar is $10 and includes dinner.

Gilroy – The Gilroy Writing Project Presents a presentation by Emily Reich Shem-Tov ‘Cool Tools – Blog Authoring from A-Z,’ 2 to 4pm, Sat.
Reich Shem-Tov will give a multimedia presentation on the A to Z of cool blog stuff you can use to enhance or author your own blogs, including a list of online links (from her site) for later reference. Her international technical achievements are too numerous to mention, learn more about her at: chocolatespoon.com.

Colorguard competition
Gilroy – Gilroy High School will be the home of a Colorguard show Saturday from 6:30 to 8:30pm featuring Gilroy, Live Oak and San Benito high schools, among others from the Bay Area.
Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for students, seniors and children.

Fuzzy friends need a loving home
Gilroy – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter need help to find loving families for the many homeless companion animals currently at the shelter and in foster homes.

Free practice for the SAT
Gilroy – Princeton Review will provide free practice testing and a strategy session for high school students at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St. Students must sign up at the library by Saturday. Test is 10am to 2pm Feb. 3 and results and strategy session is 10am to 2pm Feb. 10.

ICF polenta dinner benefits charities
Gilroy – Italian Catholic Federation Branch #28 presents the seventh annual Polenta Dinner Feb. 3, St. Mary Church Cullen Hall 11 First St.
Proceeds benefit ICF charities. Take out dinner available after 5:30pm, bring your own containers. Dinner to be served from 6 to 7pm. Donations $12, adults and $5 children younger than 10. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
