Time To Grow Up!
CALLER 1: I’m calling to voice my opinion on an incident that occurred at the girls’ Minors softball field on Thursday night. I’m one of the All-Star coaches for the 9- and 10-year-old girls’ team. We are preparing to play in the state tournament this weekend in Martinez (Green Phone Note: The team finished in third place). On Thursday we arrived at the field to find three adult (if that’s what they call themselves) men using the field. After a lengthy argument they used the “We were here first” excuse and refused to move. Come on, SLOW PITCH softball, what a manly sport. I hope they felt real good about themselves when they told our girls to take a hike. Being a Gilroy native, I was embarrassed to see that people like this exist in my hometown.
GREEN PHONE:
Dear Time to Grow Up!,
Wow, you mean three overweight men who try to relive their glory days through slow pitch softball need to get a clue? This Blows Green Phone’s mind. OK, seriously now, this message goes out to any men who play softball and kick little girls off of fields to practice – REAL MEN DON’T NEED TO PRACTICE SOFTBALL!
Maybe you three weren’t taught how to share as kids. If this is the case, GP has done a little research and found that “Child Growth and Development During the School Years” is a course being taught at Gavilan College this fall. You have the option of receiving a letter grade or Pass/No pass credit. Green Phone recommends baby steps in your journey to manhood – take the Pass/No Pass.
Freaked Out Fan
CALLER 2: I was just wondering, since the Giants brought back Brian Sabean, can we expect to see Barry Bonds for the next few years, and see the Giants in last place while Barry Bonds adds to his home run record?
GREEN PHONE:
Dear FREAKED OUT FAN,
Don’t worry, Barry Bonds is as good as gone at the end of the year. While General Manager Brian Sabean can be blamed for putting this group of bums together, it would be shocking if the team looks remotely similar at the start of spring training next April. You can expect Bonds to be retired or playing elsewhere, guaranteed. The Giants had to bring Bonds back for the home run record simply because the team put up with so much of the Balco and Grand Jury crap just to get to this point. Once he breaks the record though, all bets are off.
While it would have been nice to have Bonds break the record in June to see if he could be traded for prospects this year, there is still reason for hope. Most of the Giants players are so old they’ll be retiring – or getting canned – soon, and Sabean will start over with a new core next year. The rebuilding process could be sped up exponentially if Alex Rodriguez, who will be opting out of his contract with the Yankees at the end of this season, signs with the Giants. That would make the rebuilding process a lot closer to six months than say, six years.
