Want to know what your friends and neighbors are thinking everybody’s favorite boy wizard? We talked to locals about the recently opened fifth movie and the book due to hit shelves next week. We also chatted with kids visiting the Knight Bus in San Jose, which is finishing up a nationwide tour to help launch the final book. Sssh! The wizards are sleeping upstairs …

Spoiler alert! BEWARE! If you haven’t read books five and six, parts of the following quotes will reveal major plot points and ruin the movie and books for you! Proceed at your own risk.

“I can’t wait for the book and the movie, but I have to say I’m more excited about the book. We’re finally going to find out how everything ends. Of course I want Harry to be triumphant, and, not to be too blunt, kill Voldemort. I’d also like to see Sirius Black and Dumbledore come back.

“My kids, Dylan and Jessica, are 8 and 5 but I’m pretty sure I’m more excited about the book and movie than they are. But, I think this is going to be the best movie yet. The fifth book was my favorite so far, so I think the movie has the potential to be amazing.”

– Cindy Boyd, Morgan Hill

“I’m probably most excited about the book, because they’ve all been so much better than the movies. You just got so much more information that the movies always edit out. I think Neville (Longbottom) is going to be a big part of the ending, whether it’s a battle or whatever. I’ve always felt like he could be ‘the chosen one.’ I think there’s even a chance Harry might die, so there’s no chance of any other sequels. I’m also really curious to see if Snape is on the good side or the bad side. I’ve got a countdown on my computer to when the book comes out, and it’s already preordered and being shipped to my house.

“My kids can’t wait for the movie to come out. I think it will be more dark and sinister, and maybe frightening to younger kids, but I think it’s going to be packed with action. I’m really looking forward to seeing it.”

– Tina Zamaripa, Gilroy

“I’m probably most excited about the book coming out because it’s the last one and there’s a lot of stuff I really want to find out. I think one cool thing that could happen is that Harry could be a horcrux. I’m also curious if Wormtail (Peter Pettigrew) ends up repaying his life debt to Harry by helping him out. A lot of people are talking about Snape, but I think he’s good. I think he had to kill Dumbledore to keep his cover as a Death Eater. But most of all, I hope Harry lives. I’d be really sad if he died. I’ll be sad anyway, because it’s the last book, but I do want Harry to live and finally be happy.”

– Alex Engelhardt, 14, Hollister

“I’ve read all the books 10 or 15 times. I was 9 when I started reading them, and I really didn’t want to. My mom kind of made me, and I’m so glad she did. I can’t wait for the last book to come out. I think Snape is evil for sure, and I don’t think Dumbledore is coming back. He already told Harry that people can’t come back from the dead. I think Voldemort is definitely going to die and Harry will live, but my mom says he can’t come away from that kind of battle unscathed.

“I love these books because anything can happen and they always keep you guessing. I’m going to be sad that this is the last book in some ways, but right now I just really want to read it.”

– Sarah Cavanaugh, 11, Hollister

“I like Harry Potter because of all the magic and stuff in the books. We decorated my room with some Harry Potter stuff, like a big fake owl in a bird cage that looks real, and a spell list and some wands. I also look like Harry Potter.

“When I read the books, I like to imagine the story as it goes on because it makes it really interesting to do that. I’m about half way through book five and I haven’t read book six yet. But I’m glad book seven is coming out so I can find out what happens as soon as I finish the other ones. I’m not sure what’s going to happen, but I think Harry won’t stay with his cousins any more at the end and Snape will be a bad guy and there’s going to be a big battle between Harry and Voldemort.”

– Jake Dahm, 9, Gilroy

“I can’t wait for the book because it’s the last one. I think Harry is going to destroy the horcruxes and he’ll become the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Snape is definitely a bad guy and Dumbledore is going to come back. At least, I hope he comes back.”
