Gilroy almost slipped up in its season finale Thursday, but the Mustangs rallied to take a 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 17-15 win over winless Salinas.
Gilroy started slowly, but once 6-5 junior Kevin Bruce began to assert himself the Mustangs were able to gain control in the middle games. But Gilroy fell back the fourth game and trailed early in the fifth before finishing strong to snap a four-match losing streak.
“They (Cowboys) stepped up,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “Their big players in the middle put their hands up and were (blocking) over our guys.”
Bruce finished with 20 kills, five digs and nine service points. Greg Calimpong had 43 assists and five service aces. Alfred Medenceles had nine kills. Mike Leininger had 33 digs.
“It was definitely good to go out with a win,” Grogan said. “The guys pulled themselves up and gutted it out. They adjusted to the style of play and finally started to think out there.
“It was evident that Salinas had improved. It came down to the end for the both of us with who would make the least amount of mistakes.”
Gilroy completed its season 10-22 overall, 5-9 in TCAL. Salinas finished 0-14 in the league.
