Patty Olveria pitched a complete-game shutout Thursday in a 16-0 lopsided win over Alisal in Salinas.
“I knew it would be a rough game after I saw that Notre Dame beat them 17-0,” said Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada. “We just tried to keep on top of our game, while not trying to humiliate them. It was their senior day, and they had great spirit.”
The Mustangs had one other 16-0 win this season in a tournament game against Branham.
The only hit Olveria gave up Thursday was a blooper over the first baseman’s head.
Gilroy (23-7, 8-4 TCAL) started off quickly against Alisal (2-18, 1-10 TCAL) by scoring six runs in the first inning and then scored runs in every inning except the last, including another six-spot in the fourth.
The highlight of the first inning was a two-run home run by Jasmine Perez, who leads the team with seven home runs.
Olveria, Kylie Herrada and Lauryn Chris all had three hits for the Mustangs. Yolanda Esquivel and Caitlyn Pierotti added a pair of hits.
The Mustangs will wait to find out the results of the Central Coast Section seeding meeting Saturday to see who they play in the first round of the playoffs.
“I am real excited about the playoffs,” Hallada said. “We are a strong team especially when we play teams we don’t know. (How we practice next week) all depends on who we play. We’ll have a pretty intense practice and will work on some conditioning.”
