Student Art Exhibit at Gavilan College
Gilroy – The public is invited to view paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages and photography on display at the Gavilan College Library, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The show features two and three dimensional works spanning a wide range of media and content. The two dimensional works on display vary from pencil to painted, and simple to extremely detailed.
Large scale self-portraits and still-lifes cover the walls, as well as two large painted murals celebrating Latino culture. The exhibit will close Tuesday. Library hours are 8am to 8pm Monday through Thursday, and from 8am to 3pm Friday.
Flower Sale Benefits Softball Team
Gilroy – The 2nd Annual Flower Sale fund-raiser sponsored by Goldsmith Seeds, takes place from 8am to 2pm Saturday, at Goldsmith Seeds, 2280 Hecker Pass Highway. The sale, which benefits the Gilroy Chaos Sports Organization, girls fast-pitch softball, includes impatiens, marigolds, petunias, verbena and zinnias. Proceeds will go toward team equipment for the 2007 season.

South Valley Symphony Season Finale
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony’s season finale takes place at 4pm Sunday at Mission San Juan Bautista.
The program will include Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor. Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 55 and older, and $15 for students (12 to 18). Price includes wine and cheese tasting after the concert.

‘The Jungle Book’ on Stage at SV Middle School
Gilroy – The city’s Community Services Department and Director Erin Cross presents Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” featuring actors ages 6 to 15. Performances are Saturday and May 18 and 19 at 7pm; and a Sunday matinee at 5pm May 20. All performances are at South Valley Middle School, 385 IOOF Ave.

‘Shake, Rattle & Roll’ Auditions For All Ages
Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie present auditions for “Shake, Rattle & Roll,” the ultimate 1950s and ’60s musical reunion. Auditions will be held today in the Wheeler Community Center Dance Room at 250 West Sixth St. All ages are welcome, including parents. Ages 5 to 9 at 12pm, ages 10 to 14 at 2pm, and ages 15 through adult at 4pm. Please prepare to sing a short, bright, up-tempo song (without music) and wear comfortable clothing.

Pianist Visits Gavilan College for Performance
Gilroy – The Gavilan College Music Department presents pianist Andreas Werz. The show begins at 7:30pm, May 19 in the theater on the campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Werz is the artistic director of the internationally renowned recital series, “Philip Lorenz Memorial Keyboard Concerts.” Werz has performed extensively in the United States, Mexico, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. He is also in his 21st year as a professor of piano at California State University, Fresno.

Assemblywoman Anna Caballero to Visit Gilroy
Gilroy – Assemblymember Anna Caballero is holding her first coffee meeting in Gilroy since joining the state Legislature in Sacramento as Gilroy’s representative. The event is open to the public at It’s a Grind Coffee House, 890 Renz Ave., Gilroy (near Lowes) from 10:30am until noon Saturday, May 26.

El Teatro Rocks ‘The Fascinatrix’
San Juan Bautista – Rock musical “The Fascinatrix” will show at El Teatro Campesino Playhouse in San Juan Bautista, 705 Fourth St.
Kinan Valdez, associate artistic director of the world renowned El Teatro Campesino, has written and directed a workshop production that has astounded the opening weekend audiences.
In late December 2006, Valdez and his musical collaborators embarked on writing a rock musical “inspired by ancient world myths of the Goddess.” A fairy tale for our times was created and titled, “The Fascinatrix,” about the rise and fall of the gods of war. It will be performed in English.
After the show, the audience is encouraged to participate in a “talk back” where they may share their comments and feedback with the cast.
Performances will take place at 8pm today, and at 2pm today and Sunday.
General admission for adults is $20. Students and military persons pay $15. Children pay $12.
