And yet Gilroy is making a strong bid to be second best.

The Chieftains shot 195 Thursday at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club to easily post low team honors. Gilroy shot 216 to beat host San Benito’s 221. Palma’s Cory Donnelly and the Haybalers’ Darell Aton shared medalist honors at 38.

“We had a discussion (Wednesday) at practice and I told the guys (San Benito) always plays well at Ridgemark,” GHS coach Eric Kuwada said. “We have to play consistent and not make big mistakes on the course. There have been times when San Benito has upset many a team there.”

Thursday was not one of those days because the Mustangs played well enough to hold off the ‘Balers. That puts Gilroy 2.5 points ahead of Salinas going into the last two tournaments.

“League finals and Palma’s tournament next week (Wednesday at Laguna Seca) will be critical in keeping our standing,” Kuwada said.

Jordan Miller led the Mustangs at 40 followed by Jonathan Higgins’ 41 and Dan Dockendorf’s 43. Those three scores were better than San Benito’s second best shooter.

“Jonathan and Jordan played well,” Kuwada said. “They are solid, the core of our team. We got a great performance from Dan. He can play a solid round in the mid-40s that will help our team.”
