Hi. I’m a Gilroy High School football player and I’m calling
regarding the article of Gilroy High School vs. Serra.
Mustang Pride
CALLER 1: Hi. I’m a Gilroy High School football player and I’m calling regarding the article of Gilroy High School vs. Serra. I thought there was a lot of positives about the game and all the pictures seem to be very negative. We did put up 31 points and Jamie Jensen set a school record for 466 passing yards, and the only picture of him was getting sacked. I thought maybe there could have been a better picture. And, Marshad Johnson had an outstanding game and also caught for 160 yards, and the only picture was of him getting laid out.
All the pictures were positive for Serra and made us look a little ridiculous. But they’re a tough school and we did put up 31 points so I thought the pictures could be a little more positive (for Gilroy). But there was also some nice things said in the article. So, thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
GREEN PHONE: Dear Mustang Pride, We appreciate a player’s perspective any day of the week. As for the pictures being a little too one-sided, you could be right. There were some good things Gilroy did at the end of its game with Serra that might not have received enough attention, especially the play of Jensen. In regards to the picture of Johnson, GP thought that photo did him justice for holding on to the ball despite taking a big hit.
In the future we will make sure to give readers more photos so all aspects of the game can receive proper attention.
Everything Football Returns
Yeah GP, this is ‘Everything Football’ weighing in on last week’s game. You know, I agree with you and everything your article said. I haven’t seen a beat-down like that since Permian played Dallas Carter on “Friday Night Lights” … The Mustangs just got a butt-whipping. There’s not much else you can say other than it’s hard for public schools to play against private schools. I mean, everybody on the field for Serra is a $10,000 a year player, that’s the school tuition to get in. And their main running back, I forgot his last name (GP note: De’Leon Eskridge) … he doesn’t even live in San Mateo. He’s from San Francisco. He’s like one of the top 100 preps in the nation. I think Serra would give Gavilan College a good game.
Other than that, you know, what I don’t understand, coach (Rich) Hammond is once again doing a great job with the offense but the defense is terrible. It’s a blowout game and there’s a couple linemen playing both ways … I mean, come on man, there’s some other linemen on the sidelines, put ’em in there. It’s a zone-blocking scheme, give someone else a chance because the offense is working obviously but the defense is terrible and the TCAL is gonna (cause) a lot of problems because there’s a lot of teams in there, other than Palma, (that can run the ball).
Speaking of Palma, I think you kind of handed them the title already and discounted Gilroy and everybody else. I mean, dude, they played Skyline, Sequoia, and they only lost to De La Salle 55-zip. I think Gilroy can show up and put up a pretty good game against them … I think the coaching staff (should) concentrate on defense before the league starts. Hopefully we can get that tightened up and get some wins. Go Mustangs man. Talk to you later.
GREEN PHONE: Dear Everything Football, You nailed it this time. (And, it doesn’t hurt that you said we nailed it in our coverage.) As for the run defense, GHS coach Hammond has probably been losing sleep over that aspect of the game ll week. The Mustangs did face the two best running backs in the section so it might be hard to judge whether it was the competition or a fatal flaw to Gilroy’s TCAL title hopes. After tonight’s game against Salinas, it looks like the Mustangs are back on track after cutting their yards per game given up on the ground in half.
As for private schools having an advantage, we don’t know about Serra and it players, but you’re 100 percent right that these schools will always have top-notch talent as long as they convince enough of the right players to come play ball and pay a few bills (with scholarships being offered to some).
It would be even harder if private schools could recruit players. Of course, that would be illegal, right.
