Gilroy – All talk becomes cheap on gameday.

And while Gilroy has been clamoring to get back on the field after a disappointing 4-6 season in 2006, the Mustangs will have to put their money where their mouth is at 7:30pm tonight at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

The Mountain View Spartans, who went 6-4 a year ago before being bounced by Leigh in the first round of the CCS playoffs, are looking to get off to a quick start behind their third year starter at quarterback Jeffery Jalaba.

Jalaba, now a senior, threw for 1,184 yards, 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season, completing 54 percent of his passes in 2006. While Jalaba started out strong last season, he cooled off considerably at the end of the year. The Mustangs will look to continue that trend by putting pressure on him early and often, which could work considering Jalaba is small in stature (5 feet nine inches, 160 pounds) and not especially nimble.

“He is a straight passer from what we saw in the scrimmage (last week),” said Mark Carrick, GHS quarterbacks coach. Carrick cautioned that watching scrimmages can be misleading, though, saying the gameplan “was vanilla.”

The Spartans have a balanced offense that will work out of a traditional two-back set. On defense, the team will try to apply pressure on the outside and confuse Mustang quarterback Jamie Jensen. Operating out of a 3-4 front, Mt. View has a coach that was the defensive coordinator for the University of Georgia last year, according to GHS head coach Rich Hammond.

Despite the resume, Gilroy running back Sean Hale said he wasn’t impressed by what he saw on tape from the Mt. View scrimmage.

“They’re good, but they have no pass defense,” Hale said. “They play too far back.”

Gilroy can talk. Now let’s see how they walk.
