Gilroy Mustangs

The Christopher girls soccer team has racked up 13 goals this season — and its only played two games.
The Cougars picked up their second shutout, a 6-0 win over Capuchino at the Burlingame Tournament Saturday.
Paulina Llamas and Vanessa Koontz led the offense with two goals a piece. Koontz also had an assist. Natalie Fillippi and Emma Morley each added a goal and Morley assisted on scores twice. Jasmine Contreras also had an assist for Christopher.
CHS (2-0) will be back on the field at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Salinas.
Mustangs drop two in Watsonville tournament
The Gilroy girls soccer team didn’t get off to the start it had hoped for.
The Mustangs lost twice at the Watsonville Tournament, losing 4-0 to Aptos on Dec. 2 and 3-0 to Santa Cruz Friday. Results from the team’s game against Monterey Thursday were not yet available.

Gilroy will host Live Oak at 6 p.m. Thursday. 
WRESTLING
Five Cougars 1st at Novice Tourney, 2 at Half Moon Bay
The Christopher wrestling team took home five first place finishes in its season opener and followed up with two more over the weekend in Half Moon Bay.
Freshman Felipe Duenas (106) took first in both the Monterey Bay League “Novice” Tourney in Hollister Wednesday and the Half Moon Bay Tournament to open the season undefeated. 
Keanu Calimpong, Anthony Figueroa, Collins Oronkwo and Dean Augustin also finished in first at the “Novice” tournament, while Evan Duran took second.

Senior and defending 106-lb. Central Coast Section champ Jimmie Lopez (113) joined Duenas in the winner’s circle at the Half Moon Bay tournament. Jacob Myers (145) finished second, Navi Pannu (heavyweight) took third and Calimpong finished fourth.
 
Justin Garza and Figueroa took first place for the JV squad at the Overfelt JV Tournament Saturday. 
 
Zack Taylor and Oronkwo finished second. Augustin, Duran and Alex Bobadilla all finished third for Christopher.
 
Christopher has a home meet vs. Monta Vista at 6 p.m. Wednesday. 

BOYS SOCCER
Cougars tie with Gunderson, beat St. Francis
The Christopher boys soccer team have recorded a result in each column — and the Cougars are only three games into the season.
Christopher tied with Gunderson 2-2 on Friday on the road, giving them a 1-1-1 overall record on the season.

Christopher gave the home crowd something to cheer about, picking up a 1-0 win over St. Francis Central Coast Catholic during its home opener Wednesday.
The lone goal was scored by Hibsen Tamayo and improves the Cougars to 1-1 on the season. 
The Cougars will be back in action at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Pioneer. 
Mustangs fall to Lincoln
The Gilroy boys soccer team lost the opening round of the Oak Grove Gold Cup Saturday.
The Mustangs were bested by Lincoln, 3-1, but stats from this game were not yet available.
Gilroy will play in the second round of the Oak Grove Gold Cup at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Harbor.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cougars fall to Los Altos in season opener
The Christopher girls basketball team hung tough with the visiting Los Altos in the first quarter, but then the Eagles flew away with the game.
The Cougars were held to single digit scores in the remaining three quarters, falling 51-26 to Los Altos in their season opener Thursday at home.
Christopher trailed 17-11 at the end of the first and were held to just eight points in the second quarter. The Eagles shut down the Cougars’ offense in the second half, holding them to just seven points after the break.

Christopher (0-1) will look to rebound against King City at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at home. 
Mustangs top Pajaro
The Gilroy girls basketball team picked up its first ‘W’ of the season, topping Pajaro Valley 51-26 Thursday at home.
The win improves the Mustangs to 1-1 on the season.
The girls team will be back on the court at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Anzar High School.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mustangs go 1-2 in Aptos Tournament
The Gilroy boys basketball team opened its season by going 1-2 in the Aptos Tournament in Santa Cruz. 
The Mustangs opened with a 77-52 loss to Gunn on Thursday, but were able to rebound with a 56-40 win over Watsonville Friday. Gilroy lost its last game 63-46 to Soquel Saturday.

Gilroy (1-2) will be back in action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Anzar High School.
