Dear Red Phone,
“I’m concerned about all the purple ribbon bows placed throughout the city and was wondering what the code enforcement officer and her assistant are going to do about that. If the party that placed the ribbons, have they received a citation or a warning? As a former garage sale participant, I know they’ll yank our signs down and several people have been fined. Thank you.”
Dear Reader,
Wow … you sure know how to make Red Phone even redder. But maybe you just aren’t aware that the “paint the town purple” campaign has to do with Gilroy’s annual American Cancer Society fundraising event Relay for Life rally. That hardly corresponds with a garage sale sign hanging on a pole for two weeks. It’s more akin to the yellow ribbons around trees that signify the hope for a family member in the military to come home soon. Gilroy’s Relay for Life is Saturday, and there’s still time to participate or dedicate a luminaria. Visit the event website here for more details. Freshen up the outlook, Romaine, and help the cause to cure cancer.
Manuel Haro, online chair for Relay For Life Gilroy, says event organizers also obtained a “Paint the Town” proclamation from Mayor Don Gage at a June 3 City Council meeting.
“We contacted the City code enforcement officers and City graffiti task forces were notified to not take any purple decorations down until the relay,” Haro explained. “We thank the City of Gilroy for being so supportive to the cause.”
