Perkins will run for assembly seat
Monterey – Bob Perkins, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau, has said he will run for the Assembly seat being vacated by Simón Salinas, D- Salinas.
Perkins, a Republican, vied for the seat in 2004, losing to Salinas, who represents Gilroy and is ineligible for another term.
“I look forward to a positive campaign that will explore ways to improve the Central Coast’s effectiveness in the California Assembly,” Perkins said.

‘Jekyl and Hyde’ workshop
Gilroy – The Gavilan Employers Advisory Council, a partnership between local employers and the California Employment Development Department, is sponsoring a workshop titled “You Hired Dr. Jekyl, but Mr. Hyde Showed Up to Work.” The breakfast meeting will be in conjunction with the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce at the Gilroy Hilton Wednesday from 6:45 to 10:30am. The cost of the breakfast and seminar is $10 with reservations or $15 at the door.

Endless Summer Nights Saturday
Gilroy – A community fund-raiser classic car show and reception featuring a concert by Al Jardine, a founding member of The Beach Boys, as he make a guest appearance with the band, Live Action Heroes. Endless Summer Nights, sponsored by Leadership Gilroy Class 2005, will be held Saturday, from 5 to 10pm at Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park.
Proceeds will go towards a music program for Mt. Madonna High School.

South County Democratic Club
Gilroy – All Democrats and Gilroy residents are invited to the next meeting of the South County Democratic Club, where candidates for Gilroy City Council will be seeking endorsements.
The meeting will be held at 10am Saturday, at the home of Kristine Dillon, 3385 Hecker Pass Highway. While all candidates will be invited to make presentations, only registered Democrats can receive endorsements. Following the meeting, members will be treated to a barbecue/picnic.

Openings with symphony
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony has openings in all string categories, namely violin, viola, cello and contrabass, when rehearsals resume for the orchestra’s 32nd season on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7:30pm at the band room B7, Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way.
Openings also exist for trombone, oboe and percussion instrumentalists. Applicants should have had sufficient training in their respective category and be able to readily read and follow music tempos.
The symphony is a community orchestra and a class is offered by Gavilan College. There is no cost whatsoever to participate since all registration fees are paid for by the symphony’s board of directors. College credit is allowed for satisfactory attendance at rehearsals and concert participation.
Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evening from 7:30 to 9:45pm.

New Shelter Plus Care Program
Gilroy – EHC LifeBuilders announced the beginning of a new Shelter Plus Care Program that will house nine chronically homeless individuals at three different sites: the Borregas Court Apartments in Sunnyvale, Connell Apartments in Gilroy and Markham Plaza Apartments in San Jose.
Interested applicants must fit the admissions criteria specified and must call before 4pm on Aug. 26 to be eligible for the random drawing that will occur at 5pm that same day.
