A 20-year-old Gilroy man was arrested Nov. 1 for driving under the influence after he struck and killed a construction worker on Interstate 680 in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Adrian Valencia Sanchez was arrested after the CHP responded to a collision at approximately 2:41 a.m. involving a 2010 Ford F-350 flatbed truck and a 2000 Nissan Altima on the right shoulder of the Interstate south of Scott Creek Road, according to a CHP press release.
For an unknown reason, the CHP says Sanchez left the roadway, drove up on the right shoulder and collided with two construction workers who were removing a sign at the time of the wreck. As a result of the collision, 34-year-old Frankie Jimenez, of Dixon, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office. The other construction worker, a 26-year-old Vacaville resident, was transported to the San Jose Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
The CHP says Sanchez was extracted from his vehicle by first responders and sustained “major injuries.” Following treatment, he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. Sanchez was wearing his seatbelt.
