Gilroy – The Gilroy field hockey team didn’t have to wait long for a little revenge on last season. In their first game of the season Friday, the Mustangs played to a 1-1 draw at Los Gatos, which ended Gilroy’s season abruptly in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs last November by a score of 5-1.

“It was a pretty good contest, I think, considering the last two years we’ve lost like 5-1, 5-1 to them,” said Gilroy coach Adam Gemar.

Gilroy junior Kelly Perkins scored the ‘Stangs only goal early, five minute into the game. Perkins was assisted by sophomore Dana Schoeneman (first assist) and junior Rushelle Preeshl (second assist).

The Mustangs held a 1-0 lead for the majority of the game thanks to the net play of junior goalie Stephanie Glenn, who played most of the game, and backup senior goalie Brittany Simpson, who had several key saves.

But Los Gatos evened the match with four minutes to go after Gilroy was called for a defensive foul within the shooting circle. Needing to score with time winding down, the Wildcats placed all their field players at the penalty line. Stacking the penalty worked and Los Gatos scored on the corner to tie the score 1-1.
