Meeting to discuss WNV tonight
San Jose – A community meeting to discuss mosquito spraying in South San Jose will be held this evening, at 6:30pm, at the South Side Community Center, 5585 Cottle Road, San Jose.
The Santa Clara County Vector Control District will spray the Santa Teresa area of San Jose, between midnight and 4am, Thursday, Sept. 1., in an effort to eradicate mosquitos infected with the West Nile virus.
This is the first year mosquitos in the county have tested positive for the virus.
Meeting to discuss bulding regulations
San Jose – A special meeting of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and planning office will be held Wed., Aug. 31, from 930 am to 4pm, at the Hyatt Hotel, at the Minetta San Jose International Airport. 1740 N. First St., San Jose.
The supervisors will discuss new regulations for building homes on county land. Topics include house size limits, cell phone tower rules and annexations. Public input is welcome.
Gilroy Library celebrates rivers
Gilroy – Kids will have the chance to wear pajamas to the library next month to hear bed-time tales of alligators, frogs, and other river creatures, as part of a regional commemoration of a new river park in San Jose.
The event – “River Critters: frogs, alligators, raccoons” – takes place Sept. 20 at 7pm and is one of a series of events geared for children and adults throughout the month.
The Gilroy Library and seven other branches of the Santa Clara County Library System are holding river-related programs in commemoration of the grand opening of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens, 120 acres of open space in San Jose.
Gilroy Library’s programming will include films, storytelling, and a book list of recommended reading. Adults will have a chance to see the first local screening of an award-winning documentary on the work of a British environmental sculptor: “Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy, Working with Time.”
There will be three film screenings: Sept. 1 at 4pm; Sept. 17 at 11am; and Sept. 28 at 7pm. The County Library’s Bookmobile will be the scene of storytelling at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens celebration event on Sept. 10.
The park and adjacent gardens provide flood control, protection of sensitive environmental habitats, recreation and beautiful river vistas.
The free event, from 10am to 4pm, will give the public a chance to explore nearly three miles of winding banks along the Guadalupe River.

First bilingual spelling bee
Gilroy – Fifth graders have something to talk about.
Santa Clara County will host its first bilingual spelling bee this year.
The National Latino Peace Officers’ Association and Wendy’s joined together to celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage.
Each fifth grade classroom will receive program components, a teacher’s guide and more than 100 words. A top student will be selected from each classroom to compete at the 2005 Santa Clara County Deletree Conmigo Bilingual spelling Bee.
A final will be held in 2006 where students compete for computer systems for the top three spellers. Students representing each class will be asked to spell a word either in English or Spanish.
Schools that sign up before Jan. 13, will be automatically entered in a random drawing to win $500 for school supplies.

Gilroy – Learn how to get started the right way by participating in this 2 1/2-hour workshop presented by the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center.
“Get Your Business Up and Running” presents an overview of marketing essentials, produce selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, risk evaluation, bookkeeping, financing and management issues.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center, in the Dry Creek Village, 8351 Church Street, Bldg. E.

Learn the secrets of composting
Morgan Hill – The cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill in coordination with the County of Santa Clara host a ‘Composting Basics for Beginners’ class Saturday, Sept. 10, 10am to noon in Morgan Hill. Admission is free.
Local Master Composters conduct the workshop, and attendees will learn how to purchase low cost compost bins and equipment to get started composting.
All adults in the class will have the chance to win a free Earth Machine backyard compost bin.

Free screening clinic for children
Hollister – A free screening clinic will be held to identify children who can benefit from the expert care provided at Shriners Hospitals.
If you know any children under 18 who might have orthopedic problems bring them to the free clinic Saturday, Sept. 24, 10am to 2pm at Hazel Hawkins Hospital, 911 Sunset Dr., Hollister.
All care provided at Shriners Hospitals is absolutely free of charge. Please bring birth certificate, immunization records and social security card if you have them.
