The California Highway Patrol along with Impact Teen Drivers is urging younger drivers to stop texting, put away cell phones and focus on driving, according to CHP Officer Erica Elias.

April has been designated as “National Distracted Driving Awareness Month” by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and CHP is inviting teen drivers and their parents to attend a Start Smart/Impact Teen Drivers class, said Officer Elias.

The class will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 16 at the CHP Hollister-Gilroy Office located at 740 Renz Lane in Gilroy.

People interested in attending the class should call (408) 848-2324 to reserve a seat.

Distracted driving is a big problem in California, especially among teen drivers as they try to stay constantly connected to their friends, said Officer Elias.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
