Boys Water Polo
Mustangs open season with a W
The Gilroy boys water polo team won its season opener 11-8 at Everett Alvarez Thursday. 
The Mustangs were led by juniors Brendan Reimer and Sam Mandel who each racked up five goals in the game. Sophomore Minh Nguyen added on of his own. 
Richie Bermea was stellar in goal for Gilroy, denying 21 of Alvarez’s 29 shots and blocking 14 attempts. Sophomore Derrek Harris-Beres had three steals in the game while senior Joe Vanni had two of his own. 
The Mustangs will take on their crosstown counterpart Christopher at 4 p.m.  Tuesday at home.
Cougars finish fourth in tourney
The Christopher boys water polo team finished fourth in its inaugural Cougar Boys Water Polo Tournament Saturday.
The Cougars picked up two wins on Saturday to finish in fourth and faced Washington, Fremont and San Lorenzo Valley over the two-day tournament.
Girls Water Polo
Mustangs throttle Alvarez in season opener
Senior Abby Kienle got right down to business in the Gilroy girls water polo season opener.
Kienle scored six goals in the match, leading the Mustangs to an 11-1 decision at Everett Alvarez Thursday.
Seniors Katie Clark and Kailee Chang added two goals in the game while senior Jaci Boyd had one. 
Sophomore goalie Ariane Lussier allowed only one goal on 14 shots, adding six blocked shots and a steal to her game stats. 
The team will be back in action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when it takes on Christopher at home.
Volleyball
CHS tops Alvarez in season opener
The Christopher volleyball team swept Everett Alvarez 3-0 in its season opener Thursday at home.
The Cougars (1-0) won 25-21, 25-15, 25-17 — a much more decisive contest than last year when they won 3-2. 
Michelle Toves returned to the Cougars after being sidelined with health issues. The fourth year varsity libero had 1.96 passing score and 16 digs in the game. 
Olivia Tabron had 13 kills, while Joy Kirkwood had seven. Cheyanne Dela Merced had 28 assists, four kills and four digs for the Cougars. 
Field Hockey
CHS starts season 0-2
There was no easing into the season for Christopher. Just three minutes, the Cougars trailed 2-0 Thursday at Los Gatos. 
Christopher would end up losing 5-0 to LG, but put up a stellar defensive showing. The Cougars D blocked multiple shots on goal as well as nine penalty corners. 
The Cougars had a much better showing at Willow Glen Friday. CHS lost 1-0, despite blocking multiple shots on goal and several penalty corners.  
Goalie Kyle Robinson led the defensive effort against LG and was supported well by Mariana Bura, Gianna Brown, Sherelle Butler, Denisse Rubio and Emily Hilkene. 
LG led 3-0 at halftime and scored again 10 minutes into the second half. The team’s final goal game came midway through the second half. 
The Cougars will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow for their home opener against Leland. They will play their first league game against Stevenson at 3:30 p.m. Friday at home.
