SALINAS – Gilroy High’s boys basketball team dropped its second game of the season to the Alvarez Eagles Thursday night, losing 58-51 in Salinas.
Holding leads after the first two quarters, the Mustangs saw the game get away in the second half through turnovers, Gilroy coach Jeremy Dirks said. Gilroy led 15-11 after the first quarter and 30-28 at halftime, but found itself trailing 42-41 entering the fourth.
“Basically we’ve been playing hard,” Dirks said. “We had a little more turnovers than normal. We weren’t as careful with the ball.”
Tyler Hartman led Gilroy with 19 points, 15 rebounds and three assists, while GHS point guard Elijah Harrell had 14 points, 13 of which came in the first half.
Along with trouble handling the ball, the Mustangs were also bitten by foul trouble. Forwards Jamie Jensen and Dolapo Opere were both forced to the bench for extended periods of time due to picking up personals
Sergio Lopez scored a game-high 24 points for Alvarez (15-7 overall, 3-6 Tri-County Athletic league).
Gilroy (13-10, 4-5) will play its final three games of the regular season at home, beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m. against rival Hollister (12-10, 4-4).
