SALINAS – The Gilroy Chaos Blue 10U girls softball team continued its tournament hot streak, finishing 6-0 to win the ASA September Smash Tournament in Salinas Sept. 26-27.
The Chaos have finished in the top spot in their first three tournaments of the 2010 season.
Gilroy cruised through its first game 19-1 over the Marin County Smakers, but faced stiffer competition in Game 2, scraping by the Carmel Valley Stingers, 4-1. Maddie Cox went 3-for-3 against the Stingers and Michaela Decker ripped a home run.
The Chaos received a one-hitter from Maria Sandoval on their way to a 6-3 win over the San Jose Renegades in Game 3. Cox was again perfect at the plate going 2-for-2, and Anna Gamboa also had two hits.
Decker pounded two home runs and Cox put together a double and a triple in an 11-1 victory over the Morgan Hill Spirit in Game 4 to send the Chaos to the semifinals. Anjelica Reyes pitched a one-hit gem and also added two singles and a triple in the win.
Gilroy made easy work of the Salinas Storm 9-1 to advance to the championship game. Kaitlin Benjamin went 2-for-2 with a single and a double.
In a rematch with Game 2 opponent Carmel Valley, the Chaos stood firm shutting out the Stingers 6-0 behind a steady defense. Sandoval, playing at first base in the game, turned an unassisted double play in the top of the fourth inning to thwart a bases-loaded no-out threat by the Stingers. Pati Soria went 3-for-3 to lead the offense.
