GILROY – With the big boys having the week off, the Christopher High and Gilroy High freshman football teams take center stage under the lights tonight at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

For the first time, the two crosstown schools meet on the football field, giving fans who attend a glimpse into the future which will certainly contain many hard-fought, passionate contests.

Though Friday’s game counts toward the teams’ records and there is some school pride involved, the atmosphere should remain celebratory as a new era of football in Gilroy gets underway.

Christopher High’s athletic director, Darren Yafai, jokingly suggested the “Garlic Bowl” as the official title for games in the coming years between the two schools separated by just four miles.

The “Garlic Bowl” seems the obvious choice, but how the series plays out remains to be seen and open to great debate and speculation.

The two teams gathered for a pasta dinner on the campus of Gilroy High on Thursday night to get to know one another, Yafai said.

Both teams are coming off losses last week. The Mustangs fell to Salinas and the Cougars lost their homecoming game against Liberty Ranch.

Kick off is set for 5 p.m.
