Warner Peninsula Division I playoffs on Sunday.
SAN JOSE – For the second week in a row, a stingy Gilroy Browns Junior Midget defense stifled its opponent’s offense en route to a 14-0 victory over the Almaden Mustangs in the semifinals of the Pop Warner Peninsula Division I playoffs on Sunday.
Linebackers Nico McMurray and TJ Cox led the team in tackles with McMurray registering two sacks in the win.
With the Browns up 8-0 late in the fourth quarter, McMurray forced a fumble and teammate Nick Raras fell on the loose ball.
The defensive stand set up an insurance touchdown with two minutes remaining in the game.
The Browns were able to capitalize on the turnover two plays later on a 5-yard touchdown run by Eddie Garcia. The score was set up by a 48-yard scamper by Mark Quinby.
Both teams’ defenses stood stout in the first half as neither offense could mount a charge, leaving the score 0-0 at the half.
The Browns finally broke the tie on a Jacob Moen 2-yard touchdown moments into the fourth quarter.
Saturday’s championship game features the 10-0 Browns against 6-2 Santa Clara.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Yerba Buena High School in San Jose.
