This past weekend a handful of Gilroy Gator swimmers braved the
long drive to Bishop and participated in the 40th annual Bishop
Invitational Swim Meet.
Bishop – This past weekend a handful of Gilroy Gator swimmers braved the long drive to Bishop and participated in the 40th annual Bishop Invitational Swim Meet. This is the fifth year head coach Tom Clark’s Gators have competed for the coveted Mule Shoe plaque which is presented to the first- and second-place swimmers who score the most points among their age group.
This year Isabella Comin, 13, placed first in the 50-yard, 100-yard, 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events; the 200-yard IM; the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly; and the 100-yard breaststroke. Comin also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke. Juliana Sih, 18, placed first in the 200-yard IM; the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle; the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke; and the 100-yard backstroke. Second-place trophies were presented to two Gators. Scott Castruita, 17, was first in the 50-yard, 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle; first in the 100-yard breaststroke; and second in the 200-yard IM; 100-yard freestyle; and 200-yard breaststroke. Daniel Shields, 15, was first in the 50-yard, 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle; first in the 100-yard backstroke; second in the 200-yard IM; 100-yard freestyle; 100-yard breaststroke; and 100-yard butterfly; and third in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Other Gator swimmers who participated were first-timers Garrett Pipkin, 10 (one 1st, two 2nds, five 3rds and one 4th-place ribbon); Deanna Allen, 10 (one 13th, one 14th and one 16th); and Wilson Allen, 10 (one 3rd, one 5th, one 9th and one 10th). Veteran Gators at the meet included: Kimberly Davis, 9 (one 2nd, three 3rds, four 4ths and one 5th); Francesca Comin, 11 (three 2nds, one 4th, two 5ths and one 6th); Margarita Garcia, 11 (one 2nd, two 3rds, three 4ths, two 6ths and one 7th); Michael Shields, 12 (one 1st, two 2nds, six 3rds, and one 6th); Michelle Shields, 12 (six 4ths, two 5ths, one 6th and one 11th); Nicole Kramer, 11 (one 2nd, two 3rds, three 4ths, one 5th, one 6th and one 8th); Melissa Davis, 13 (three 3rds, two 4ths and one 6th); and Lauren Castruita (one 5th, one 6th, one 7th, one 8th and one 9th).
The Gilroy Gators’ next swim meet is on Saturday, July 9 at the Gilroy High pool, followed by another meet on Saturday, July 23, also at GHS. The Gators will be at the zone championship meet from Aug. 5-7, likely to be held at the Morgan Hill Aquatic Center.
