SALINAS – A scoreless first half was the calm before the storm Wednesday afternoon in Salinas, as Gilroy High’s girls soccer team exploded after intermission to win its Tri-County Athletic League contest against Alvarez 6-0.

Ariana Vera led the way for the Mustangs with two goals, and Indra Garcia, Katelyn Nebesnick, Breanna Rose and Savannah Silacci all had one apiece. For Rose and Silacci, a sophomore and freshman, respectively, it was the first goal in each of their GHS careers.

While one might expect Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez to be happy with the outcome, it was almost the opposite.

“We had set goals before (the game) so they will be running (Thursday in practice),” he said. “It’s really hammering the details, playing up to our ability.”

One of Hernandez’ main concerns was allowing three shots in the game, as well as being held silent in the first half. He added that a possible disparity in talent level between Gilroy and Alvarez (6-4 overall, 1-2 TCAL) shouldn’t matter.

“I judge (the team) based on our ability,” Hernandez said.

The Mustangs (5-2-3, 2-0) will resume league play Friday at 5 p.m. in Gilroy against Salinas.
