Police arrested a man and a woman in connection with a gang-related attempted murder case involving at least eight additional suspects and four victims, one of whom survived a slice to the throat, police said.
Isaac Carrillo, 20, and Leticia Chaigres, 46, allegedly beat and stabbed four young males in north Gilroy last February, all of whom were in the late teens or 20s. Along with other unknown females, police said Chaigres lured the victims, whose names police withheld, to a house party near the intersection of Westwood Drive and Driftwood Terrace. Once there, Carrillo and an unknown number of additional male suspects surprised the victims, yelling gang-related phrases while attacking them with “stabbing instruments,” Sgt. Jim Gillio said. Chaigres and at least one other female allegedly bludgeoned the victims with a a blunt object.
After escaping the violent trap, the victims drove themselves to a trauma center in another city to receive treatment for “severe” injuries, Gillio said. An employee there called police after noticing the “suspicious wounds,” which included a cut throat on one of the victims who was stabbed.
Neither witnesses nor victims immediately reported the crime, but police gathered enough information to track Carrillo down to an apartment near Mantelli Drive and Kern Avenue Monday afternoon, where they arrested him for attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two additional unspecified warrants issued by outside agencies, Gillio said. Officers arrested Chaigres June 3 along Pacheco Pass Highway for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and fraud. Both suspects live in Gilroy. Carrillo was also arrested in October 2008 for conspiracy to commit a crime and vandalism, according to Dispatch archives.
Both Chaigres and Carrillo were listed on the Dispatch’s Most Wanted.
Police are still searching for “a bunch of suspects” present during the attack that occurred about 3 a.m. On the scene, officers recovered unspecified evidence that Gillio would not describe. Gillio also declined to say if the suspects were on foot or driving or if the attack occurred inside or outside someone’s home. Police typically withhold details about an investigation from the public so officers can have the upper hand during later interviews with suspects.
