Community Pulse: Rescind health benefits

Would you sign a ballot petition aimed at rescinding health
benefits for City Council members?
THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:

Would you sign a ballot petition aimed at rescinding health benefits for City Council members?

Yes: 6 No: 6

â–  No. School boards and other elected officials receive this benefit. Their public service is at least worth that. They spend a huge amount of time reading agendas, attending meetings, chairing committees and talking with the public. This cuts into their business and work time.

â–  NO! This is a matter that can be addressed by measures outside of a ballot petition. The council is an elected body that should respond to public opinion and personal contact.

â–  NO. Benefits can be reduced further, but not strip them completely.

â–  Yes, if that was the only aim of the petition.

â–  Yes. What makes health benefits sacrosanct for council membership? Shouldn’t each member already have his/her own health benefits?

â–  No. Don’t these people deserve to have some rights with their personal initiative to actually spend time trying to make things right and run our city’s government for no real pay? People deserve any payment for the time it takes to be an active member in a democracy, be it in the form of money or in benefits.
