An unidentified man was injured Friday when the tractor he was
driving crashed and overturned into a utility pole, pinning the
driver inside.
A tractor overturned into a utility pole, pinning its driver for several minutes until paramedics arrived in an accident on Monterey Road in San Martin.
About 3 p.m. Friday, a Massey Fergusson tractor was traveling about 25 miles per hour south on the shoulder when a GMC pickup truck struck it from behind near the intersection of California Avenue, according to Officer Matt Peters of the California Highway Patrol. The tractor spun out of control and rolled over onto its side, pinning its driver between the tractor and a utility pole on the west side of the road.
The pickup continued south for a couple hundred yards before it crashed into a ditch off the west shoulder of the road. The truck’s driver, Frank Luberto, 58 of San Martin, was arrested for driving under the influence of narcotics, and released to the hospital with “major non-life-threatening injuries,” Peters said.
Luberto is also accused of traveling at an unsafe speed of about 50 miles per hour, Peters said.
The driver of the tractor, who bystanders at the scene identified as an employee of nearby LJB Farms, was also transported to the hospital with a “moderate injury” to his right leg. Both drivers were treated at San Jose Regional Medical Center. Peters did not have an update on the injuries at press time.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, plus a tow truck responded to the accident.
