GILROY – Gilroy baseball fell a run short of upending the Palma Chieftains Friday afternoon, as the Mustangs lost their Tri-County Athletic League game 8-7 to drop to 10-5-1 in the TCAL (16-11-1 overall).

Palma improved to 21-5 overall, 13-4 TCAL.

Trailing 4-1 after the first inning, Gilroy responded by tacking on two runs in the second and one in the third. The Chieftains scored twice in the fourth and in the sixth, leaving Gilroy in an 8-4 hole with two frames to play. The Mustangs added three runs in the bottom of the sixth but could come no closer in the seventh.

Taylor Chris had a team-high two RBI for Gilroy, while Jose Gamboa, Jordan Holler and Eric Vegas all plated one run apiece.

The Mustangs will be back on the diamond today at 4 p.m. when they play at Hollister.
