the way to a 38-13 non-conference victory over the host Gavilan
College Rams at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Saturday night.
GILROY – Cabrillo College struck for 17 points in the second quarter on the way to a 38-13 non-conference victory over the host Gavilan College Rams at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex Saturday night.
Gavilan was able to score first for the second consecutive game, but Mike Incardona’s four-yard scoring strike to Timothy Harvey one play into the second quarter proved to be the only Ram score until the game’s final 10 minutes.
“We played a lot better this game (than the 42-7 loss to American River),” said Ram coach John Lango. “Our special teams were a little better. We played more physical this time.”
Incardona finished with 216 yards on a 22 of 41 performance. Andrew Gayles (33 yards on 11 carries) and Sean Hale (30 on 7 carries) anchored the Gavilan rushing game.
“Gavilan’s internal runs did well,” said Cabrillo coach Bill Garrison. “We hadn’t seen much of that part of their offense because they were forced to throw the previous game. Our team was very balanced, running and passing. We were able to put significant pressure on Gavilan’s passing game.”
Cabrillo took advantage of a blocked Ram punt two minutes into the second quarter to convert a 28-yard Anthony Bendana field goal with 11:29 left in the half.
“Giving up that blocked punt, even though we held them to a field goal, seemed the change the momentum of the game,” Lango said.
Cabrillo took a 17-6 lead into the lockerrom with two rushing touchdowns. Kyle Hardwick scored from five yards out with 4:59 left. Byron Newman pushed over from the one with 2:04 to play in the half for the 17-6 advantage.
The Seahawks generated two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 31-6 lead.
Nick Johnson pulled in a four-yard scoring pitch from Ian McGinnis with 9:43 left. Newman added another one-yard scoring run with three minutes left in the period.
Cabrillo finished scoring when Stephan Gutierrez slanted off right tackle from the 13 on a fourth-and-three call with 11:40 to play in the game.
Hale powered off left tackle for a four-yard TD run with 9:51 left for Gavilan’s second touchdown.
“Defensively, we played hard the entire game” said Lango. “The defense was on the field alot, yet they didn’t stop playing.”
