Gilroy – The Heat took a while to get hot this season, but with their first victory of the year this Saturday at Christmas Hill Park, the Gilroy Firefighters’ Association team is suddenly scalding.

Beating the Straw Hat Rip Tide 15-7 in Gilroy Little League girls’ majors play, the Heat now stand 1-6 and had plenty to get excited about in a high-scoring game.

Danielle Kinoshita of the Heat pitched all six innings for the complete game win, and was helped out by the bats of Alexis Duarte and Sarah Ordaz, who collected three hits apiece.

Perhaps no member of the team was as thrilled as Amanda Lambert, who bunted herself aboard to collect her very first hit of the season.

For the Rip Tide, starter Casey Lester matched Kinoshita for stamina, going the distance. Amanda Poso had two hits for the Straw Hat side.

Heat coach Mark Ordaz is thrilled about the parity in the majors division this year.

“Last year my team was 15-1,” he said. “This year, there’s five good teams up there (in the majors). Every game is fun because every game is a challenge.

“Gilroy’s going to have outstanding all-star teams this year.”

Meanwhile, in the girls’ majors, Rosso’s Furniture and S.C. Chrysler Dodge continue to roll, with both teams undefeated and untied on the season.

In the girls’ minors, Our Pet Stop is the steamroller of the early going, racking up a 7-0-1 record, with Handmade Healthcare nipping at their heels with a 6-2-1 record.

On the boys’ side, Garlic City Billiards (American) and Gilroy Health & Fitness (National) top their respective major divisions, with just one loss apiece.
