5.11-17

• Use a good vegetable fertilizer on tomatoes, peppers and eggplants for early crops and thick foliage to prevent sunburned fruit.

• Apply three inches of mulch around camellias and azaleas to reduce summer stress and bud drop. Remember to keep the mulch away from the stem or trunk of the plant. If you don’t, they may suffocate or develop rotting diseases.

• This month fertilize your camellias and azaleas. If they are near the end of their bloom period use an acid based fertilizer. If they are just beginning to bloom then use 0-10-10.

• Feed roses with a systemic rose care product to control insects and encourage continued blooming. Cut off old flowers as roses finish blooming.

• Check apple and peach crops. Remove excess fruit if too much has set. This will give your fruit better size and save stress on the tree.

• Prune all spring flowering trees and shrubs once the bloom is mostly concluded. This includes forsythia, flowering plums, lilac, loquats, quince and others.

• Raise lawn mower height to at least two and a half inches for the spring and summer.
