Martin Murphy Middle School students release balloons as they pass by a plaque of Tara Romero during a dedication ceremony Thursday for a memorial in honor of Romoero.

Friends and family of Tara Romero, 14, shared memories and tears as they dedicated a memorial plaque in the murdered teen’s honor at Martin Murphy Middle School Thursday.

Romero was killed in a drive-by shooting Nov. 4, 2011 at the corner of Cosmo and Del Monte avenues in Morgan Hill. Three other teens – friends of Romero’s – were also shot but survived.

Romero attended Martin Murphy from 2009 to 2011, and was a freshman at Sobrato High School at the time of her death.

School staff, joined by Romero’s mother, sister and other family and friends, dedicated the plaque in the school’s garden.
