Gilroy High manager Jared Gamble observed an adjusted approach from his players during Tuesday’s Tri-County Athletic League road test against Salinas High.
Unfortunately, a victory didn’t follow in tow as the Mustangs dropped their fourth straight TCAL tilt, 4-2, to the Cowboys.
“They played a lot better today,” Gamble said. “They definitely looked a lot less stressed and hit the ball a lot better.”
However, the error bug bit the Mustangs once more. Three of the four Cowboys’ runs were unearned, pushing the total to 17 unearned runs surrendered in seven games.
“You can’t win ball games that way,” Gamble said. “We had solid pitching again with Brendan Holler and the bats were better, but we couldn’t get it done.”
Using a Bubba Lara two-run single, GHS (2-5 overall, 0-4 TCAL) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Marcus Medina and Ronnie Reed scored on the play.
The Cowboys tallied two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to tie it 2-2 and plated one run in both the fourth and sixth frames.
The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. But a laced line drive off the bat of Jordan Dexter was snagged by Salinas’ second baseman and turned into a game-ending double play.
“It was a screamer,” Gamble said. “It was a rough way for it to end.”
Gilroy is back in action Thursday at Alisal.
