Christian Goldstein had 13 points, Charles Walker had 12, and the Gilroy boys basketball team earned its first Tri-County Athletic League victory of the season, outlasting Alisal 47-38 on Friday night.
The Mustangs (6-10, overall, 1-4 TCAL) wrap up the first half of league at Salinas (10-7, 3-2) on Wednesday and return home Friday versus Alvarez (10-6, 3-2.0 Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
• Marcus Harrell electrified a crowd that was hunkered down underneath umbrellas, blankets and anything else to protect them from the swirling wind and rain, with a 65-yard touchdown run in the second half that was part of a 26-6 West victory over the East in the 28th annual Salinas Jaycees All-Star football game Friday night at Monterey Peninsula College.
Harrell was one of 10 local athletes selected to the all-star team, showcasing seniors who participated on teams in the tri-county football leagues. Christopher High quarterback Brandon Pickens started for the West and connected with Gilroy High wide receiver Jourdan Soares for a 40-yard gain in the second quarter. Gilroy right tackle Alfredo Mireles protected Pickens’ blindside throughout the evening. The West led 18-6 at halftime.
The defense was loaded with Christopher High representatives, including Bryant Cid, Mikey Pirnik, Patrick Mank and Dillon Babb. Pirnik recovered two East fumbles, Cid recorded eight tackles, Mank had four and Babb three.
• The Gilroy High girls soccer team expanded a 1-0 halftime lead into a 4-0 victory over host Alvarez on Friday in Salinas, pushing its Tri-County Athletic League record to 4-0.
Kiara Santamaria (2), Monique Barragan and Morgan Rogers tallied for the Mustangs. Four different players – Cynthia Sanchez, Alexi Slattery, Connie Contreras and Maggie Trigo were credited with the assists.
• The Christopher High boys basketball team squandered a 13-point third quarter advantage en route to a 67-61 loss at Monte Vista Christian on Friday night.
Dillon Day led the way with 19 points, Wyatt Rocheleau contributed 14 points and Andrew Foster had 11 points. The Cougars (6-11, 2-3 Monterey Bay League) hit the floor Thursday at Watsonville (9-8, 5-1 MBL) at 7 p.m.
