Head coach Matt Tait described the Gilroy High boys basketball team’s Tri-County Athletic League opener at Everett Alvarez as “not pretty.” The Mustangs (5-8 overall 1-0 TCAL) dropped a 63-33 decision to the Eagles (8-4 overall, 1-0 TCAL) in Salinas on Wednesday night.

Tait added that the Eagles’ length and height was too much for the Mustangs, and coupled with the Mustangs’ struggles scoring the basketball, the matchup proved to be a tough one.

Gilroy has one day of practice to ramp up for a showdown with league rival San Benito at home Friday night. The Balers (10-3, 1-0) beat North Salinas 53-38 on TCAL opening night. Palma (5-7, 1-0) defeated Salinas (10-3, 0-1) 65-62 also on Tuesday.

Game time between the Mustangs and Balers Friday night is slated for 7 p.m. inside Bob Hagen memorial Gymnasium.
