Gilroy – Five Gilroy High athletes compete today at San Jose City College in the CCS Track and Field Semifinals with the hopes of moving on to next week’s CCS Finals meet.

Bobby Best (discus, shot put), Frank Valadez (high jump), Christian Cania (triple jump), Arnulfo Velasquez (3200m) and Sierra Barroza (discus) will put it all on the line.

Best is the Mustangs’ top prospect to move on. The junior, who took first in the discus and second in shot put last weekend at the TCAL Finals, has seeding marks of 155-09 in discus and 48-03.00 in shot put. The top-seed marks at the meet are 171-00 for discus (Rolando Gomez, Pioneer) and 53-02.00 for shot put (Greg Bianculli, Riordan). Valadez has the fifth-best seed mark in high jump with a 6-02.00.

The top eight finishers in field events advance. In the 3200m, Velasquez must either win his heat or have one of the next eight fastest times to qualify.

Field events begin at 9:30am and running events begin at 11am. Next Friday’s Finals have been moved to Los Gatos High School.
