Help wanted: Volunteer this summer

priorities. There’s nothing wrong with earning a little cash, but
sometimes helping someone for free just feels better.
Besides, college admissions departments are impressed by
community service and volunteer experience.

The city of Gilroy’s volunteer service program offers positions for a wide range of interests, such as cleaning up parks and creeks, helping with the city’s recreation programs and working in the Gilroy Senior Cente,. (408) 846-0400. Other senior centers also welcome volunteers, such as Valley Pine Retirement Inn in Morgan Hill, (408) 779-2855.

Hospitals also seek volunteers to help at the front desk and with patients. Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, (831) 637-5711 or Saint Louise Regional Hospital, (408) 848-2000.

If you enjoy books and reading, consider helping out at a library shelving books or reading to kids. Gilroy Library, (408) 842-8207, Morgan Hill Library, (408) 779-3196 or San Benito County Free Library (831) 636-4107.

Help out some furry friends at the San Martin Animal Shelter, (408) 683-4186.

Saint Joseph’s Family Center in Gilroy provides food, shelter, clothing and other necessities to homeless and near-homeless individuals and families. Volunteers are welcome in the food and clothing banks. (408) 842-6662.

Each year the Gilroy Garlic Festival seeks volunteers to help the festival run smoothly, including taking tickets and giving directions. (408) 842-1625.
