The Morgan Hill Branch of the American Association of University Women is offering a $2,500 scholarship in memory of William R. Keig, long-time branch member and Morgan Hill educator who died on Oct. 31, 2011.
The funds for the award come from donations given in his name by friends and family. Because of Keig’s devotion to the field of education, applicants must be planning a career as a public school teacher and be in their third or fourth year of undergraduate study or fifth credential year.
Keig was also a strong advocate for women’s education, so only women are eligible for this scholarship. Those with demonstrated financial need and a connection to Morgan Hill will be given priority consideration.
Keig served as principal at a local elementary school and assistant superintendent of the Morgan Hill District School District before retirement. He was one of the first to join AAUW after membership was opened to men in 1987. As a member of the branch, he helped raise funds for scholarships for women and girls and assisted in the selection of local scholarship recipients.
For application details go to www.aauw-morganhill.org and click on Local Scholarships. Deadline for application is November 1, 2012.
In addition to the William R. Keig Memorial Scholarship, AAUW-Morgan Hill offers awards to community college women and local high school girls. Funds for these scholarships come from the annual Wildflower Run held each spring.
