A pair of field hockey standouts while at Gilroy High are set to meet again, this time on opposite sides of the pitch.
No. 12 Iowa and No. 11 Stanford cross paths Friday and each features former Mustangs – junior Elise Ogle for the Cardinal and sophomore Dani Hemeon for the Hawkeyes.
Ogle arrived at Stanford on an academic scholarship in 2010. She appeared in 21 games her freshman season, scoring two goals and assisting on another three. She red-shirted 2011.
Olge, who also ran track, earned Mission Trail Athletic League Most Valuable Player as a senior in 2009, captaining the Mustangs into the playoff semifinals. She was also named the Dispatch’s Senior Athlete of the Year.
Hemeon, a three-sport athlete, helped transition the field hockey Mustangs from the MTAL into the Central Coast Section’s top division – the Mount Hamilton – in 2010. That year, as a senior, Hemeon was named the league’s MVP as she anchored GHS in its CCS finals appearance.
Hemeon, who was named to 2012-13 USA under-21 Junior National Squad in July, has started the Hawkeyes’ first three games of 2012, scoring a goal in the team’s home opener on Sunday.
Friday’s contest is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start at Stanford.
