Hollister – The Gilroy High track team simply doesn’t have the numbers to stay with the likes of Hollister in a dual meet. The Mustangs knew this going into Thursday’s competition with the Haybalers in Hollister.

This season’s Gilroy track squad is prepared for limited success as a team, even as individual stars shine at dual meets. And the ‘Stangs put together some impressive individual performances on the soggy track at San Benito High despite falling to the ‘Balers 112-23 on the girls’ side and 84-42 on the boys’.

“You’ve got to have numbers to compete at the dual meets,” said Gilroy boys’ coach Guido Zvigzne. “But I think we did okay today. The kids were competitive. We did really good in the long jump and a lot of our other kids took some time off in their events.”

Gilroy’s Robert Best figures to compete for the overall Central Coast Section title in the discus. And on Thursday in heavy winds, the Gilroy junior easily took first in the competition with a distance of 152 feet, five inches.

Best was also dominant in the shot put, taking first place over Hollister’s Nick Kostielney with a throw of 47-11.

“It was okay,” said Best of his performances. “The (shot put) ring is a little bit slick and that threw me off a little. But overall I’m pretty satisfied.”

Gilroy’s Frank Valadez notched another victory in the high jump against Hollister. Valadez’s height of 5-10 was good for first.

Joseph Gutierrez scored another first-place finish for Gilroy in the 100 meters with a blazing time of 10.87, just edging Hollister’s always-fast Chuck Thompson, who ran a 10.88, at the line.

The girls’ side of the competition featured a great back-and-forth battle in the discus between Hollister’s Crystina Osborne and Gilroy’s Sierra Barozza. Both throwers were forced to throw into strong winds at times, and they finished the day dead even atop the standings with identical throws of 99-8.

Susanna Scott of Gilroy was tops in the 100 meters. It was a tight race but Scott’s time of 13.76 was just good enough to put her ahead of Hollister’s Osborne.

The Gilroy girls got another first-place finish from Heather Leuchars in the 400 meters.
