Dear Editor,

Now begins the Democratic doubletalk – this election year’s shuck-and-jive – with an apparent yet devious goal: divide Gilroyans into partisan defenders for the upcoming non-partisan City Council election.

The con comes from Mark Moore, President, South County Democratic Club (Letters – Aug. 23). He writes his organization “… is proud to announce the endorsement of…” two Council candidates. These were “… subjected to detailed questions and answers…” and club members “… concluded that these two candidates best represent Democratic Party ideals. The two endorsed… “were clearly apart from the other candidates and deserving of our endorsement.”

Mr. Moore fails to mention, in his approximate 335-word exuberance that the South County Democratic Club endorsement is given ONLY to registered Democrats – a powerful consideration by the club in evaluating the qualifications of all five candidates .

And the club’s choices? One rejected by voters four years ago, the other to be rejected by voters in the upcoming election.

What’s more ludicrous is Moore stresses “There are many other qualifications … that make a good City Council representative… act on many issues that are not reflected in partisan politics.”

The club members apparently couldn’t think of any relative to these two candidates – none were mentioned. Moore might consider, before proclaiming his club’s limited and biased endorsements, that all members actually do believe in and support those candidates registered as Democrats, a rather meaningless qualification in a non-partisan race.
