Gilroy – Maria Wetzel will soon fill the shoes of principal at Luigi Aprea Elementary School, where she will start full time Oct. 17.
She will be replacing Sergio Montenegro who served as principal at Luigi Aprea since 2000. Montenegro accepted a position as principal of Mount Madonna High School this fall.
The Principal is currently tying up loose ends at Forest Hill Elementary School in the Campbell Union School District before she makes the permanent move southward. She currently resides in San Martin and said she welcomes a chance to become involved in the Gilroy community through the elementary school.
“Luigi Aprea does have an excellent reputation,” Wetzel said. “I hope to continue moving forward and working with the parent team that is very active.”
The parent club at Forest Hill is very active, Wetzel said, and she is looking forward to working the Luigi Aprea parents. She said cooperation between parents and schools is “one of the most wonderful things students can have that enriches their academic and social life.”
Wetzel has eight years of experience as an elementary school principal in the Cupertino and Campbell. She spent 10 years as an elementary school teacher after she completed her teaching credential and her master’s in education at the University of San Francisco. Though she enjoyed her years as a teacher, she said being a principal has its benefits.
“You get to know and be a part of the lives of many more students and more teachers,” she said.
