Edwin Frances “Nod” Driscoll November 7, 1934 – March 6, 2017

On March 6, Edwin Francis “Nod” Driscoll passed away peacefully at home in Scotts Valley with his family at his side. He was 82.
A native Californian born November 7, 1934, he received his master’s degree in plant pathology from UC Davis and went into strawberry farming. After serving in the army in Korea, he returned to California and his farm. He was proud that his Driscoll Berry Farms participated in the development of the patented Z5A strawberry, the first large strawberry which extended the season and allowed the fruit to be shipped long distances. His Z5A established Driscoll’s as the global fresh berry leader.
During this same period, he developed and built a shopping center in Gilroy, and founded the Gilroy cable TV company. He was always ready for a game of cards or golf and at one time was the California amateur left-handed golf champion. He was also an avid tennis player for many years and made many life-long friends through the game. The twinkle in his eye, his quick wit, and legendary sense of humor endeared him to many. He was a loving and generous man.
He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia, children Christine Taylor, Paul (Patsy) McGill, Kathy (Kirk) Mathew, and grandchildren Katie (Michael) Lipton, and Kasey Mathew. He was preceded in death by daughter Susan Chastain.
There will be a private, family Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
