Cupertino – Gilroy had its chances Thursday, but the Mustangs couldn’t cash in and dropped a 1-0 decision in boys’ soccer to host Monta Vista in the opening round of the Homestead Cup.

“We just didn’t seem to have any determination or energy,” said GHS coach Brian Hall. “We had control 70 percent of the game but they seemed to win most possessions of the 50-50 balls.”

The Matadors scored on a penalty kick seven minutes into the game and were able to maintain the advantage despite being outshot 10-3.

The Mustangs (1-1) had a chance to tie the game with seven minutes left when Jose Velasquez broke away and moved one-on-one against the Matador goalie. But the shot was right at the keeper. Velasquez, however, had a strong game getting almost half of Gilroy’s shots on goal.
