Gilroy girls beat up on Salinas; Face Sobrato today on Senior
Night
Gilroy – Move over, Boston Red Sox. The Gilroy girls basketball team has broken its own curse.

In the past few years, the Lady Mustangs have had nothing but bad – really bad – shooting luck at Salinas High.

But on Tuesday, Gilroy reversed the curse with a resounding 73-26 win, which included a 27-point third quarter. More importantly, the win locked up sole possession of the Tri-County Athletic League title for Gilroy (22-4,11-0 TCAL)

“This is a big deal. We’ve always had trouble. We’ve had some of our worst games in that gym,” said Williams, whose team lost at Salinas last season. “Last year, we shot like 11 percent from the field. Seriously, it was so bad and I’ve never won in that gym.”

The way the first half started, Williams thought that might be the case once again. Gilroy led just 32-27 at halftime.

“(Katherine Hussey) was missing everything and Kristen (Campos) had a three go through the net and come back out,” Williams said. “I was like, ‘Oh, no. This cannot be happening.'”

And after a nice little “pep talk” at halftime, the shooting woes went away. The Mustangs broke the game open in the third quarter. Senior forward Jessica Groppe (15 points) had five field goals and Hussey (22 points, 6-for-6 FT’s) had 15 points during the 27-point quarter.

Point guard Campos drained four three-pointers and finished with 16 points. Sophomore Vanessa Wilkins added nine points.

The team hosts Sobrato tonight at 7pm for its final regular season game and Senior Night.
