Gilroy High School students involved in Monday afternoon
rollover are all OK
Gilroy – Jay Raven was definitely speeding when he crashed his friend’s white Acura through a guardrail and into a ravine on Santa Teresa Boulevard Monday afternoon.
“We believe speed absolutely contributed to the cause of the accident,” Gilroy Police Department Sgt. Kurt Svardal said.
Officers calculated the Gilroy High School senior’s estimated speed at the time of the accident but are not releasing the number until they conduct further interviews, Svardal said. Whether Raven, a GHS varsity football player, will face charges has yet to be determined.
Raven was driving north on Santa Teresa Boulevard with three of his fellow varsity football players, when he swerved into the southbound lane, smashed through the guardrail, rolled the vehicle and landed in the ditch below.
Passengers Chris Hernandez and Sebastian Muro were both ejected from the vehicle and transported by helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center. Michael Kuzinich was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
Hernandez and Kuzinich, both GHS seniors, were treated and released Monday. Muro was treated for a dislocated hip and was expected to be released today.
Josh Sterling, the owner of the Acura, said he handed his car keys to Raven during lunch time at GHS on Monday. Hernandez, Muro and Kuzinich were marked absent during fifth period, which begins after lunch, and Raven didn’t attend any classes Monday, according to school officials.
GHS Principal Jim Maxwell said students who cut class are assigned “work detail,” which translates to picking up garbage around campus.
