Donations for homeless during winter
Gilroy – St. Joseph’s Family Center and Articulate Solutions are continuing their efforts to help keep the homeless in our community warm and dry throughout the winter. Donations needed to help purchase and assemble Winter Survival Kits. The kits will contain items that will be helpful during the cold winter months: water repellent sleeping bags and jackets, backpacks, knit caps and gloves, flashlights and sundries such as toothpaste, socks and soap.
Checks may be written to St. Joseph’s Family Center. Please mark your check “Winter Survival Kit.” Donations may be mailed to St. Joseph’s, 7950 Church St., Suite A, Gilroy or Articulate Solutions, 65 Fifth Ave., Suite 100, Gilroy.

Battle of the bands comes to Gilroy
Gilroy – Fourteen California high school marching bands will battle it out on the Gilroy High School football field Saturday evening. The competition kicks off with a rendition of the National Anthem at 5:30pm. The Live Oak High School marching band will perform at 5:56pm, followed by Gilroy High School at 6:09pm.
The final band will perform at 9pm and awards will be given at 9:25pm.
The event also serves as the No. 1 fundraiser for the GHS band. Pepper Steak sandwiches, refreshments and other goodies will be sold a the booths on the GHS football field. Gates open at 5pm.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens.

South Valley Republican barbecue
San Martin – The South Valley Republican Women Federated club invites local Republicans (men and women) to join their annual South Valley Republican barbecue. Come meet special guests from the Gilroy chapter of “Operation Interdependence” – a volunteer organization dedicated to sending care packages to our troops overseas. The barbecue is Saturday, from 4 to 7pm. $20 per person, children younger than 14 are free.

San Martin – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter will hold their annual rummage sale from noon to 5pm Friday from 8am to 4pm Saturday, at the animal shelter.

AKC responsible dog ownership day
Gilroy – The Gavilan Kennel Club is hosting responsible dog ownership day to help dog owners raise happy, healthy dogs, from 10am to 3pm Sunday, at Christmas Hill Park. Activities include demos, microchipping, vaccinations and more.
