Facing a 5-0 hole after three innings, the Gilroy High softball team managed to claw its way back to top visiting Notre Dame 9-8 on Thursday in Gilroy.
The Mustangs (19-3 overall, 5-1 league) mounted a three-run bottom of the seventh to earn the crucial Tri-County Athletic League victory, keeping them just one game behind rival San Benito for first place. Gilroy faces the Balers Tuesday.
Playing without starting pitcher Sarah Lira and leadoff hitter Casey Lester, the Mustangs turned to freshman Holly Lam in the circle and a true team effort Thursday.
Lam surrender 16 hits but withstood the storm to earn the victory and had a key hit to start the seventh-inning rally.
After the hit, the Mustangs loaded the bases with one out on a walk and error. Pinch runner Nicole Green scored on a past ball to make it 8-7. Celeste Mendoza followed with a RBI single to tie the game and an error allowed the winning run to come across.
Dani Hemeon had two doubles, Melanie Morelos recorded a double and triple and both Lam and Michelle Sosa had two hits.
The Mustangs host North Salinas on Friday. First pitch is slated for 4:30.
