Sales tax in Gilroy rose more than 7 percent during the past three months of 2010, padding one of the city’s primary revenue sources and trumping a state average during the same period.

The city’s 7.4 percent rise in sales tax, which ranked No. 7 out of 14 Santa Clara County cities, soared above a 1.9 percent increase statewide and was the fourth consecutive quarter of positive sales tax earnings for the Garlic Capital, according to the City of Gilroy.

The biggest gains came from light industry and apparel stores. Business services and wholesale building materials saw the largest declines.

Service station sales drove current growth in local sales tax, but the uncertain nature of the that industry will continue to affect local sales tax fluctuations, according to the city.

Gilroy is known as a “capture” community because it pulls in significant sales tax beyond the per capita spending of its residents, according to a city press release.
